    Objective

Early detection of structural pathologies in masonry bridges using Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS). Full-length strain monitoring detects micro-cracks and joint decompression with millimeter spatial resolution for proactive maintenance.

    Challenge

Detecting early signs of cracking and joint decompression in masonry bridges under real traffic and exceptional loads.

    Solution

QUAD-S Monitoring employs Distributed Fiber Optic Sensing (DFOS) to perform full-length, high-resolution strain monitoring, enabling detection of micro-cracks and joint movement.

    Methodology

    • Surface grooving and bonding of fiber optic cables across the arch intrados.
    • Periodic interrogation for full-length strain profiles.
    • Correlation with displacement sensors and/or numerical modeling to validate observed behaviors.
    • Evaluation of the structural condition of the masonry bridge together with an optimized maintenance and auscultation strategy.

    Application Conditions

    • Applicable for bridges with access to arch intrados for sensor installation.
    • Requires brief traffic disruption during sensor installation (grooving and bonding).

    Monitoring System

    Sensors
    Fiber Optic Monitoring Cables
    Data Acquisition
    OFDR Interrogator

    Results

The system successfully detected joint activity and localized deformations, validating the methodology for scalable and non-intrusive monitoring of masonry arches.

    Advantages

    • Non-intrusive and repeatable methodology for aging infrastructure
    • High-resolution insights into damage development and joint activity
    • Scalable across multiple bridge types and accessible intrados conditions
    • Provides actionable data for prioritization of maintenance and intervention strategies
